Thanksgiving Woof and Meow Safety Tips!

Thanksgiving is just around the corner! This Thanksgiving avoid emergency visits with your pets by following these tips!

No Turkey- The high fatty dark meat can  cause intestinal upset in dogs and cats.  Most turkey, even white meat, is seasoned and cooked with seasonings that are toxic to both dogs and cats.

No onions, garlic or leeks- These are toxic to both dogs and cats. Avoid giving your pets thanksgiving dishes that are cooked with these ingredients such as green beans, potatoes, stuffing and gravy.

No Unbaked Yeast- Keep the unbaked rolls containing yeast, that are set out to rise away from our furry friends. The unbaked yeast can cause stomach blockages. In addition, the natural fermentation of unbaked yeast in pet stomachs can cause alcohol poisoning.

No Desserts- Chocolate is a well known toxin for pets, but Xylitol which can be in many sugar free; keto or diabetic friendly desserts is deadly for pets. Currants and Raisins are toxic as well.

Secure trash cans- A lot of times pets get into the trash cans to eat the scraps. Make sure all thanksgiving trash is secure and pet proofed.

Secure the house- As we have guests coming and going make sure pets are behind baby gates or in separate rooms with closed doors.

Secure bags and purses- It is very common for pets to get into purses which often contain toxic items such as sugar free gums/breath mints/candy and medications.

Dogs and cats can enjoy the following safe and yummy treats:

  • Fresh vegetables including carrots and green beans

  • Non sweetened or spiced pumpkin puree

  • Fresh chunks of sweet potato

  • Apples

Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving!
