Healthy Body Condition Score = Longer, Happier, Healthier Life!

It's New Years and a lot of weight loss resolutions have been made. Why not make a New Years resolution for your cat or dog to get in shape, lose weight, and achieve a healthy body condition score? A healthy body condition score equals a longer, happier and healthier life! Knowing a few simple facts can make this easy for both you and your pet.

Try not to feed table food, just 1 ounce of cheddar cheese for a 10lb cat is equal to a person eating 3 hamburgers or 4 whole chocolate bars and 1 hot dog for a 20lb dog is equivalent to a human eating 3 entire hamburgers or 2 whole chocolate bars. Another important factor for weight loss is exercise; try to exercise your pet for at least 20 minutes a day. Feed using the directions on the bag of food and a measuring cup. Also, make sure to take account for the treats given throughout the day and lessen the food accordingly.

The next best thing for weight loss is setting up an appointment for an exam and consultation with a veterinarian. There can be many reasons, including diseases, that cause weight gain. In addition, there are prescription diets and/or medications to help your pet obtain a healthy body condition. Remember a healthy body condition leads to a happier, healthier, longer life!
