Microchipping

Microchipping pets young and old is very important. It is permanent and completely unalterable, and does not change or harm the appearance of the animal in anyway. The procedure is safe, inexpensive, fast and virtually painless. Every veterinarian, shelter, and rescue scans found pets. These chips are not global positioning devices and do not have your personal information contained in the chip. Yet 30-60% of lost pets in shelters are euthanized because they cannot be properly identified and returned to their owner.  Only about 14% of dogs and 4% of cats who end up in shelters are returned to their rightful owners. As veterinarians and veterinarian technicians, when recommended, we hear the common misconception that our pet never leaves the yard. However, we hear so many concerned owners call about their pets getting lost. Many stories including the landscaper, pool service, maintenance repair or family member did not latch the fence properly, or pets becoming frightened by loud noises causing them to dig or jump out of the yard. We have even heard of pets jumping through windows when provoked or out of fear or leaving during break-ins. Pets have been found in their own front yard by unknowing strangers trying to do a good deed. Bottom line, whether your pet is young or old active or never leaves the house, they need to be microchipped and registered with current contact information so they may return home safely.
